We are Risto and Liz Lappala. We have had a lifelong dream to go voyaging under sail. In our 20’s we moved from Colorado to Washington State. After several years of ‘adjusting’ to the rain and enjoying the incredible outdoor opportunities that the area offers, we decided we really wanted to get out on the water. We both pursued commercial fishing jobs for a few summers which took Liz offshore on salmon trollers and Risto to SE Alaska on purse seiners. Along the way we learned to sail while enrolled at WWSC (now WWU) in Bellingham, WA.

Over the years we have owned a San Juan 21, and Islander 28, and now, a Pearson 367. We have also chartered in the San Juan Islands, BVI and Grenada/the Grenadines.

We have raised two wonerful sons who have succussful careers and wonderful mates. Over the years we have both had mutiple careers and now, in our sixties, find ourselves in a position to pursue our dream.

Our current plans are to take off this summer (August 2017) from Everett, WA to sail to the Sea of Cortez by way of San Francisco, San Diego and the Baja Ha Ha. We hope to spend a year exploring the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific coast of Mexico before making  plans from there.

We have spent two and a half years reworking various systems on Silver Wings, adding a water maker, solar panels and upgrading strength and safety features.

We have benefited greatly from the experiences of other by reading various blogs and websites and hope that we can contribute some insight to others.

We will outline the major projects and our travels with with posts, photos and YouTube videos.
